ASF Teacher Seminars for 2010
Welcome, Teachers!
The educational partnership between teachers and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival allows students in Alabama and across the South to learn about theatre-plus literature, history, art, sociology, and many other subjects that drama can include-by sharing the vital experience of live performance at the Carolyn Blount Theatre. ASF's teacher seminars offer educators access to theatre professionals who can provide innovative ways to meet state course of study standards through activities linked to ASF's current productions. With funding from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, Adams Foundation, and the Young Boozer Family Foundation, these teacher seminars are approved for professional development credits through the University of Alabama.
January 29, 2010: EXPLORING HAMLET
A decade after revenge plays were the rage in London, Shakespeare revisited the
revenge mode in his great meditation on the issues of treachery, justice, and mortality-
Hamlet. In this, his longest play, he also created the most studied, most cited, most coveted
role in literature, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Hamlet's seven soliloquies and the play's
multiple plot strands, the pressures of family and kingdom, God and ghost all make this
tragedy a fascinating study and a thrilling dramatic experience. Join us to examine thdynamic masterwork-its themes, poetry, rhetoric, characters, and Renaissance context.
Karen Jones Meadows not only portrays the title character in Harriet's Return, but is also the work's playwright and an award-winning actress and producer. Once an elementary school teacher, she has more recently offered workshops across the U.S. and Africa on the healing qualities of theatre. She has presented Harriet's Return (2003) across the country for audiences of all ages. Teachers will have first-hand exposure to the artist and her creative process as she shares her insights into the character and the process of turning historical events into dramatic literature. This moving play offers teachers the opportunity to examine themes of heroism, freedom, and determination so relevant for today's students.
